Up to 5 mln jobs due to stimulus: CBO

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Between 1.8 million and 5 million additional full-time equivalent jobs in the fourth quarter are due to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Congressional Budget Office said on Wednesday as it increased its estimate of the cost of the law to $821 billion, from an estimate in November of $814 billion. The effects of ARRA on output peaked in the first half of 2010 and are now diminishing, CBO estimates. The effects of ARRA on employment and unemployment are estimated to lag slightly behind the effects on output; CBO estimates that they began to wane in the fourth quarter, the researchers said.
