Tigers flying high after Inge’s walk-off home run beats Rangers

John Raffel – AHN Sports Correspondent

Detroit, MI, United States (AHN Sports) – It wasn’t an ordinary win for the Detroit Tigers.

Brandon Ingle belted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers Wednesday afternoon at Comerica Park.

What was especially encouraging for Inge and his teammates was that it was the Tigers’ second straight victory over the defending American League champions, who came into Detroit on Monday with a 9-1 record.

It was Inge’s first home run of the season and came off Rangers’ reliever Darren Oliver, 1-1.

“It really was a good feeling,” Inge said. “The guys played hard. Max Scherzer pitched well. You knew this going into the last at bat and it’s one of those things that when the ball leaves the bat you know it’s gone and it’s a great feeling. It kind of picks up your team a little bit.”

It was the fifth walk-off homer for Inge in his career.

Jose Valverde was the winning pitcher for Detroit in relief and is 2-0.

Nelson Cruz and David Murphy both collected RBI singles in the top of the sixth to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers got a run back the bottom of the sixth on leadoff back-to-back doubles by Victor Martinez and Brandon Boesch. Brandon Inge drove home Boesch for the tying run on a sacrifice fly.

Both teams had excellent scoring chances earlier in the game. In the top of the first, the Rangers had runners on second and third with one out but Scherzer, the Detroit starter, struck out Adrian Beltre and Nelson Cruz.

The Tigers had the bases loaded in the second but Ranger starter Dave Bush retired Will Rhymes on a bounce out.

Bush, making his Rangers’ debut, left after three innings, having thrown 71 pitches, but allowing no runs on three hits, walking three and striking out none.

Scherzer went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out seven.

“At some point, you have to give the opposing team credit and the opposing pitcher credit,” said Murphy. “I feel like we could have won that game today. We definitely could have won the game yesterday.”

Scherzer noted that Detroit only allowed the explosive Texas offense six runs in the three-game series.

“Overall , it’s good execution and good defense,” he said. “Our defense has been playing well. That really helps out our staff. It you execute the pitches and try to keep their big hitters at bay, then you’ll have some success. As a staff, we were able to do that during the series.”

Detroit is 5-7 after taking two straight from Texas.

“For one thing, this got us out of a skid,” Inge said. “I don’t think this team would go into a skid but you never know. It’s good momentum going into our west coast swing. I’m happy taking two-out-of-three especially against these guys. They’ve been hot right now.”

The Rangers, who also lost to the Tigers 5-4 Tuesday, fall to 9-3.

“It’s always a tough feeling. If you get beat you get beat,” Murphy said. “It’s never a good feeling when you’re done with the game and you know that you could have won.”

Texas announced Tuesday night that last year’s American League MVP Josh Hamilton suffered a non-displaced hairline fracture of his right humerus and is likely to miss eight weeks. The injury occurred while he was trying to score on Tuesday with a head-first slide at home plate.

He was replaced in the lineup by Murphy.

“That’s a good lineup, even without Hamilton,” Scherzer said.
