Plane carrying Michelle Obama aborts landing
Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – A plane carrying U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama aborted its landing on Monday because of a near miss.
The plane was just three miles away from a military C-17 cargo jet, instead of the minimum five-mile distance required by the Federal Aviation Administration.
However, the FAA said the two aircraft were never in any danger of collision and eventually landed safely. The agency said it is investigating the incident which may possibly be an air controller’s mistake.
The White House said the first lady’s life was not in any danger.
Air controllers at Andrews Air Force Base instructed the incoming Boeing 737 C-40, which had Mrs. Obama on board, to do a go around due to the lack of required distance with the military plane. The air controllers ordered the 737 to delay its landing to avoid being caught in the force of the air from the back of the C-17.
The incident came at a time that the FAA revamped rules governing air traffic controllers after seven of them were recently caught sleeping on the job.
