Microsoft extends augmented reality to Windows Phone 7
United States (AHN) – Microsoft is unveiling new tools for mobile developers at its annual conference MIX11. Meeting in Las Vegas, Microsoft told crowds, suppliers and consumers about updates coming to its mobile phone platform, which is currently locked in a battle against Apple, Google and others.
One key update will allow developers to use the motion sensor library and the camera within mobile devices using Windows Phone 7, enabling augmented reality programs.
“The integration extends deeper into the operating system via sockets and database access now available to apps and games,” Microsoft said.
Microsoft is also working hard to woo developers to write applications and games for its platform. While consumers flock to larger marketplaces like Apple’s iTunes and Google’s Android marketplace, the Windows marketplace is still struggling to build up a cache of applications.
Building their library starts with expanding their ability to work with developers across the globe. Microsoft has been working to expand their ability to work with international companies as Windows Phone 7-based mobile devices are sold worldwide.
“We’re doubling the number of countries that support creation and commerce, and we’re creating parity to the countries that only supported creation before and didn’t have the ability to sell their apps,” Microsoft’s Senior Director of Development Experience for Windows Phone 7 Brandon Watson said. “From an opportunity standpoint, that’s huge.”
