Mariners Hall Of Fame Broadcaster Niehaus, 75, Dead Of Heart Attack
Seattle, WA, United States (AHN) – Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame broadcaster Dave Niehaus died of a heart attack Wednesday at his family home in Bellevue, Wash.
The 75-year-old Niehaus was the team’s lead radio and television broadcaster since the Mariners’ inception in 1977.
Niehaus was beloved by fans for his entertaining stories and trademark calls “My oh my” and “Get out the rye bread and the mustard, grandma, it’s grand salami time!”
“This is truly devastating news,” said Seattle Mariners chairman Howard Lincoln.
Chosen by the fans to throw out the first pitch in Safeco Field history, Niehaus had his day in Cooperstown in 2008 when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
“Speaking for ourselves, our ownership and the entire Mariners family, our thoughts and prayers are with Marilyn, their children, Andy, Matt and Greta, and the grandchildren,” Chuck Armstrong, Seattle Mariners president and COO said.
“Dave has truly been the heart and soul of this franchise since its inception in 1977. With the exception of his love for his wife, Marilyn, his children and grandchildren, there was nothing Dave liked more than the game of baseball and to be at the ballpark. He was the voice of spring and summer in the Northwest.”
An Indiana native, Niehaus was elected into the Washington State Hall of Fame in 2009. He also shares the honor with former first baseman Alvin Davis as the first two members inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame in 2000.
“All of Baseball is terribly saddened tonight by the tragic news that Dave Niehaus, the voice of the Seattle Mariners, has passed away. He was one of the great broadcast voices of our generation, a true gentleman, and a credit to baseball,” commissioner Bud Selig said.
“He was a good friend and I will miss him. But he will be sorely missed, not only in the Pacific Northwest, where he had called Mariners games since the club’s inception in 1977, but wherever the game is played.”
