Johnson & Johnson to acquire orthopedic device manufacturer Synthes
New Brunswick, NJ, United States (AHN) – Venerable Johnson & Johnson announced plans to pay $21.3 billion for Swiss-American orthopedic device manufacturer Synthes.
Synthes is a leading global manufacturer of orthopedic devices. J&J plans to merge its DePuy Companies and Synthes.
That merger will create J&J’s largest medical devices unit. In addition, it will give J&J a large presence in trauma, bone implants, and surgical tools.
J&J will use a combination of cash and stock to purchase Synthes. However, the exact final purchase price will not be set until 10 days before the deal, which could take place up to a year from now.
The boards of directors of both companies have approved the deal.
