Jason Giambi overpowers Phillies; slugger rocks three homers for Rockies

Philadelphia, PA, United States (AHN Sports) – The final score, Jason Giambi 7, the Phillies 1. The Rockies aging slugger drove in a career high seven runs, courtesy of three homers, a first for the graybeard, who entered the game with a .115 average.

“It’s exciting,” Giambi said. “It’s nice to contribute.”

Giambi, a rarely used spare part, struck out with big swings in his final two-at bats while going all out for a four-dinger game.

“I was trying,” Giambi said with a grin. “That’s why I struck out twice. I was letting it fly. To come into Philly and have a game like this is special.”

The Giambino knocked in about as many runs as the Phillies score in a week. Raul Ibanez drove in the Phillies lone run. The Phillies anemic offense managed just six hits. It’s the first time the feckless offense has gotten at least a half-dozen knocks in six games.

Some of the credit goes to Jhoulys Chacin who was terrific on the bump for the Rox, fanning nine batters over seven frames in improving to 5-2 with a 2.70 ERA.

“We definitely got to hit better and score more runs” Phllies manager Charlie Manuel said. “We don’t have balance in our lineup right now. We don’t hit the ball good enough or hard enough. That’s what we got to do. We got to stay at it and get going. We have to get better.”

Adding injury to insult, Phillies starter Joe Blanton was scratched before the game due to right elbow soreness.

Kyle Kendrick filled in briefly. The emergency starter, who went three unimpressive innings, was rocked by Giambi, who homered twice off Kendrick and once off Danys Baez.

The game wasn’t the only bad news for the Phillies. After the contest, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro announced that Blanton and Shane Victorino will go on the disabled list, the former with the right elbow injury and the latter with a hamstring strain.

The Phillies are punchless, have six players on the DL and have lost four of their last five games.

However, the Phillies possess the best record in the National League at 26-17. It’s a funny game.
