Kathmandu, Nepal (AHN) – Yunus Ansari, a local media entrepreneur, was shot and injured Thursday inside the jail where he was being held on a conviction of circulating fake Indian currency.

Ansari was allegedly wounded by a man who had been visiting him at the central jail for the previous three weeks. Ansari was shot in the shoulder and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated and declared out of danger.

The shooter was identified as Ahmad Khan, an Indian national who is reportedly a contract killer, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Range, Madhav Joshi, told reporters.

Ansari is serving time for distribution of counterfeit fake Indian currency and drug peddling.

“We have formed a three member panel to investigate the incident,” spokesperson of Nepal police, Nava Raj Dhakal told reporters.

Immediately after the incident, Nepal police suspended two security officers stationed at the jail.

International press and journalist associations have asked the Nepal government to provide security to media owners and journalists who are constantly under threat from various armed groups and other non-state players operating across the country.
