Hat-wearing ladies eyed in Detroit area theft, frauds

Windsor Genova – AHN News News Writer

Detroit, MI, United States (AHN) – Police in the Detroit suburb of Sterling Heights are looking for a group of middle-aged and elderly women who wear hats when stealing, snatching purses and using other people’s credit cards in the area since last year.

Police claim that the five or six ladies dubbed the Mad Hatters have stolen cash and items worth $500,000 from unsuspecting shoppers to date. The suspects have been caught on surveillance camera usually donning a fisherman’s hat. They target wallets, valuables and unattended shopping carts.

Last week, the Mad Hatters struck again, according to the Sterling Heights Police Department.

Hat-wearing thieves are not new with the FBI. The Heavy D Bandit, a bank robber whose cap has the Old English D printed on it, was later identified as Alvin Murray and arrested in 2008 before he could rob a bank in Dearborn.
