Congress Fails To Pass Jobless Benefits Extension

Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – Legislation to extend benefits for jobless Americans for an additional 90 days failed to pass the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday.
Approximately 4 million unemployed workers will lose their unemployment compensation checks after Nov. 30.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) blamed Republicans for blocking the bill and she vowed to keep working to pass the measure.
Republicans say they will only agree to an extension if the $12.5-billion cost is offset by spending cuts in other areas of the federal budget.
Unemployment has hovered around 9.6 percent with jobs hard to find.
