Coming up: U.S. jobless claims, durable goods
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) – The U.S. government issues weekly jobless claims and the durable-goods report for February at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. The number of people filing new applications for unemployment benefits is expected to fall to 380,000 from 385,000 last week, according to economists surveyed by MarketWatch. Orders for durable goods, meanwhile, likely rose 1.5% in February, or an even higher 2.5% when the volatile transportation sector is excluded. Economists pay more attention to the second number because orders for transport goods such as airplanes often see-saw one month to the next and skew the underlying data. In January, for example, orders rose 3.2% overall, but orders minus transportation fell 3.0%.
